Grant or contract number: OCE 0222154

    Science objectives/activities planned:
Near-bottom mapping and sampling of major tectonic escarpments at Pito Deep that expose the internal structure of oceanic crust created at super-fast spreading rates at the East Pacific Rise about 3 m.y. ago. Operations include imaging and sampling of 3 study areas with DSL-120 side-scan sonar, JASON II, and Alvin. Limited nighttime dredging and Sea Beam mapping will also be done.

WHOI shipboard scientific instrumentation desired:
    12 kHz Transducer
    3.5 kHz Transducers
    Rock Dredge
Pinger for Wire Use

Is nighttime work anticipated on this cruise? Yes

    Critical MET sensors:
    Critical CTD sensors:

Do you need Seabeam? (AT and KN only) Yes

Long baseline (LBL) transponder navigation? Yes No. of xpndrs/nets: 3 nets (one in each area) each with 3 xponders
Ultra-short baseline (USBL) navigation?
Doppler/GPS navigation? Yes

Will you be using portable science vans? No How many:

If yes, please provide details:
Will there be special requirements for:

    Electrical power
No
    Equipment handling
No
    Inter/intraship communications
No
    Science stowage
No

If yes to any of the above, please identify:

Will hazardous material be used aboard, or deployed by an ROV? No

What measures or plans have been made a) in the event of a spill, and b) for the removal and/or disposal of these materials at the completion of the cruise?
We will be shipping or carrying rock material for immediate investigations with us from Tahiti. We request leaving the bulk of rock material and a limited amount of scientific equipment aboard the ship to be off-loaded when Atlantis returns to the first N. American port.
